Peter is a seasoned educator and school leader and brings an extensive network, as well as a wealth of expertise in a remarkably wide range of institutions. He was Associate Head of School at Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs from 1975, until he was appointed Head of School at Cate School in 1993. Peter left Cate in 1998 to serve as Founding Principal of Gateway Charter High School, which was recognized by the United States Department of Education as one of the ten best charter high schools in the nation. He went on to serve as Chief of Staff and Interim CEO of the California Charter Schools Association. In 2010, Peter moved to Rwanda to serve as the Founding Head of Gashora Girls Academy of Science and Technology. Peter returned to the States in 2014 to serve a four-year term as Executive Director of the Rwanda Girls Initiative. Most recently, he has worked as an educational consultant to help open a secondary school in Ethiopia, and he advises charter schools and Native American schools near his home in New Mexico.
In addition to his work on the boards of several independent schools and education non-profits, Peter has served on The Principal’s Center Advisory Board of Harvard's Graduate School of Education and is a former trustee of the California Association of Independent Schools. Peter received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History from Williams College. Peter also holds a Master of Education degree (with a specialization in social sciences) from Boston State College, and earned several competitive fellowships, including a Fulbright, for study around the world.
